O-18
O-18 enriched water is used to produce Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) F-18, which is used for PET/CT scan in hospital. In PET, or Positron Emission Tomography, O-18 water is used to produce the short-lived radioisotope F-18 as Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG). The F-18 FDG is given to patients to visualize and diagnose tumors and other critical problems of the brain, heart and other organs.
Another use of O-18 comes from metabolic research groups. Water with O-18 enrichment of 10% has been widely used to measure energy expenditure and total body water composition in human subjects at leading research clinics.
